A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story

Throughout this animated journey aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to collecting teeth from sleeping children and placing treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous creature he expected.

A Forbidden Bond and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the other. The fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a shared foe to unite against, and this is duly provided by some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they make for quite savage, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find all that many animated films targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but are not mature enough for the content 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of popular teen sagas. If your child is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
