French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and saying there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to disable the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Now French officials will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be looking for methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
